Did you check the CR before assembling?  This is a MUST.  Probably
your heads have been flycut, maybe multiple times, so the push rods
are now too long. I've seen some cross-sections where heads have been
flycut so far that the fins are about to fall off.  If it's a really
bad job, the flycut surfaces aren't in the same plane, so one or the
other(or both) barrels won't seal, result is massive compression loss
and you get to do it again real soon.  You'll need to calculate how
much additional thickness you'll have to have and get some barrel
shims.  I have seen and had some heads off wrecks that had shims in
the heads, this is not the way to go.  Also, both sides have to have
the same CR.  

There's a lot more to rebuilding than just getting some parts and
throwing them together.  Gene Berg's technical articles have lots to
say on the matter.  If you don't get the correct valve gear geometry,
you're going to have troubles, there, too.
