Then grab each axle in turn and yank it back an forth axially several times. They should each move about 1" total. Sometimes this redistributes the grease in them and actually cures them, sometimes it just makes the noise change (which is a sign that you are on the right track), sometimes it does nothing, and sometimes, I assume, it causes them ro promptly fail next time you drive the car.
