One note of caution: There was a change to the nosecone in 73. You need the right nosecone to mate with the tranny. The details are in the Bentley manual. In addition to differences in final drive ratio, there are also differences in the individual gears. Gears also varied over time within the type 3 family, although not by much. The later transmissions, 71-, are probably the strongest.
