The ignition coil uses about 1.5 amps at idle (3 amps if ignition on and
points closed but engine not running).  Maybe a bit less at higher rpm as
inductance will rise with frequency.  (Figures from MIRA report).
At 18Watts that's about like leaving the parking lights on.  I guess it
should manage quite a few hours at that rate.   I got nervous after half an
hour with a broken regulator in poor weather when I needed the lights and
wipers, but it coped OK.
