To replace a belt the tools you need are a 13mm socket, extensions, and drive to remove the two gen holddown nuts and a screwdriver to help work the new belt over the gen pulley while the gen is tilted. I sometimes use a ratcheting 13/16 box wrench to turn the gen pulley a bit at the end. It is not necessary to take the pulley apart. In an emergency there is no harm in driving with a broken belt. I once drove beltless for 2.5 hours (in daylight) and still had enough battery to restart the car after getting all the way home. It appeared that I could have driven much farther. I'm sure things would have been much worse if I had needed lights, wipers, etc, and, yes, I turned off the radio.
