Recent discussions of the Bob Hoover sermons prompted me to look over a few of his writings that I managed to print out some time ago. One of these, titled "Oil Bath Air Cleaners", discusses the theory behind the stock air cleaner. He describes the virtues and maintenance of the coir filter element and defines "coir" to be the fiber from the husk of a coconut! None of the manuals that I have seen talks much about the air cleaner construction. Hoover also mentions that metallic filter elements were tried out by American and British manufacturers, but none were as effective as coir. My question: Do our air cleaners really have vegetable fiber in them?? Seems kind of amazing to me..
