There should be a pin protruding from the ball at the bottom of the shift lever. This pin engages in the slot in the socket in the end of the shift rod and keeps the shift lever from rotating. I have seen this pin fall out, so that might be part of your problem. This will make your lever feel funny, but I wouldn't expect it to make it hard to shift. Is it possible that your shift coupling has (also?) come lose? It is accessible from below; there is an inspection plate in the belly pan just in front of the nose of the transmission.
