I have been having a problem with my shifter. What happens is that it feels as if it is just floating. Lets say you're in 3rd and shifting into 4th. You reach for the shifter and pull down to put it in fourth and all you feel is this stick that you can move 360 degrees. Eventually, I can manage to engage the gear I want but it is sometimes a struggle. You can turn the shifter around and around regardless of gear selection. I have taken it apart, cleaned it, inspected it. SOme of the chrome has flaked off of the "cap" area and there seems to be some wear underneath that area, as well. I checked the spring and it appears OK with some slight deflection ("1/8-3/16 in.). I replaced the shift rod bushing and clip and checked the shift rod coupler at the rear. All else appears normal. Do I need a new shifter? I ahve never heard of shifter wearing down before. It is very unnerving to drive in LA and all of sudden the shifter is just floating there. I have gotten good at adapting but it is still a big pain the ass. I am not talking about the tranny popping out of gear. . Has anyone had similar experiences?
