Volks, I need some help. My '64 Notch can't pass NY emissions. And I can't understand it. I took the car in for inspection, and it failed. No surprise, since the car was running poorly. Took the car to my trusted mechanic, Alex, and I told him to do *anything* to ensure that the car passed. Got the car back today; Alex rebuilt one of the carbs, did a ring job, and replaced the exhaust valves (the old ones were shot). New plugs, a tune...he assured me that I should have no problems. Full compression was restored to all cylinders, and "blow-by" (whatever that is) was fixed. So, the car went to the local chainstore service outlet - and it failed again - and much worse than before. The results, before and after: Before repair HC Reading: 865 PPM HC Limit: 700 PPM CO Reading: 9.9 Pct. CO Limit: 6.0 Pct. CO2 Reading: 6.6 Pct. (passed) After repair: HC Reading: 2959 PPM (!!) HC Limit: 700 PPM CO Reading: 9.8 Pct. CO Limit: 6.0 Pct. CO2 Reading: 4.8 Pct. How could this be? I have some guesses - should I wait for the rings to seat? Or, could the high idle of the vehicle have screwed the results? Are there any outs/loopholes for my car? Any help would be greatly appreciated. jonathan
