Re: Type III owner loyalty story

On a similar note, with no Type IIIs involved, but three air cooled
vehicles. I was leaving a sporting event at the King Dome in Seattle WA
about 15 years ago in my beater Karman Ghia 40 horse that only had
E-brakes, due to a leaky master cylinder. After the game, my friend and I
had hurried out to beat the traffic, and had a jump on most of the
spectators leaving the event on foot as we pulled onto the main road. A
block or two away from the lot, as I approached a string of traffic lights
all turning green, a large group of pedestrians decided to cross the street
in spite of our green light. There was a red Porsche 911 who had to stop
suddenly in front of me in my lane. In the right lane, there was a yellow
VW Bug, who also had to make the sudden stop. Having the choice of hitting
several pedestrians or one of the two cars, (as I pulled the E-brake lever
and buried my right foot to the floor after a couple of quick pumps), for
finacial reasons, I nailed the Bug after a fast lane change. The nose of
my Ghia was now inverted, almost perfectly. Because the group of
pedestrians scattered/jumped/ran REAL fast, and the ones who hadn't stepped
off the curb yet decided to obey the light after seeing the possible
conciquenses, the Porsche took off. The guy in the bug was real
understanding to my decision making process, and actually commended me for
the quick thinking. As his Bug had only sustained a small dent on the rear
bumper, he apologized for the damage to the front of my Ghia and didn't
want to report the accident or take any money that I offered! He said I
would need it to fix up the Ghia. I learned my lesson. Did I fix the
brakes? No, I sold the car to a co-worker "as is" for dirt cheap, (too
embarrased to tell you how cheap with what I could get for it now). After
hearing my story, did my co-worker fix the brakes? Nope, he told me the
following monday, that as he was turning a corner at an unmarked
intersection, he pulled the E-brake because he was going to fast, and
rolled the poor thing. Tough brake. :-)
