Where I grew up in Santa Ana, CA (Southern CA) there was a Squareback which had a Bug top mounted on the roof above the engine compartment. There were seat mounted on the engine lid so that the people sat up in the Bug top. The Bug windshield even had windshield wipers for those rear passengers. Made for an interesting 6 passenger car. Those rear passengers were elevated 5 feet off the ground, so it must have been a neat ride. Anyway just thought I would pass my crazy Type III story along. Since there is a discussion going on about Cold Start Systems I was wondering if anyone else out there had taken Muir's advice and disconnected the system. He states in the Idoit book that he sees no reason to inject rax fuel down the intake pipes for cold starting. That he has started hs car in very cold conditions without it and not had any problems. I have a '70 and '71 with stock FI except that I took his advice and have the cold start injector disconnected. All the equipment is install just not the connectors. I also don't have the microswitch installed that normally goes above the throttle assembly, that is triggered when you step on the accelerator. S. Ca is not very cold conditions compared to the East and some of the other places people operate Type III's. But I have taken the car to the Mts and in the high desert where I live now it can get into the teens at night/early morning and I have never had any problems. I was speculating that the cold start system was really a catch all for the fact that when the car has sat for some time (say overnight) that the system does not get fully pressurize by the two second pump run when you first turn the key on and this injector help in starting. But since I have read through our list that the temp sensor doesn't activate the system until it's real cold that doesn't seem to be the case. Just wondering what others out there have done with this system and also if disconnecting it could cause FI problems later on? Also please disregard the duplicate of this message when it finally does come out of email purgatory, since this high tech company can't always get it's mail gateway to work and I sent this message through a different one then the duplicates. ------------------------------------- Craig Woolston Lockheed Martin Skunk Works cwoolsto@ladc.lockheed.com
