Doesn't the float push up on the steel ball set in the bottom of the 
needle to close the valve? I thought the bent wire (I'm avoiding 
calling it a spring) only came into play to pull the valve open.

If that bent wire is what you're calling the spring, then it's way 
too stiff to make much difference here.

But there might still be a very soft spring under the steel ball.
