These sound like the connectors on my '59 Bug. A blade with hole for the cable end and a spring-loaded cup that is compressed to let you put the wire in the hole. The cup then pushes on the wire to lock it in. I think they moved to blade type clips '61 for general wiring, but maybe not as quickly on the headlights. The parts book shows a different connector from '66, but no detail. It calls the older one a connector, and the later one a cover - which I suppose says it all as the connectors are on the harness.
