[T3] '68 Fasty Fuel Tank Sending Unit

I'm about to get everything back together on my newly painted '68 Fasty....
The fuel guage does not work...
If I put a ground on the wire going to the guage, it sez the tank is full.
I pulled the sending unit...It looks like a sealed unit...
It has "VDO" stamped on the top, where the wire hooks up.

I tried to find one on the vendor web sites that I usually use,  no luck.

Is this a 'special' unit, or can I use a 'universal' sender??
