It's not a problem with the stock muffler, because VW left enough space there 
and also provided a heat shield. I've no experience with it, but one could 
imagine that an "over the top" muffler might get too close to the bellows and 
probably didn't provide a heat shield. You could fabricate your own, however.

Aftermarket replacement bellows are rather easy to find. The quality is 
reasonable. I stock them.
