This makes me wonder whether the mechanical advance in your 
distributor is frozen up. This is rather common, but it's easy to 
check with your timing light. Just get the light on the marks and 
then speed up the engine. The timing marks should move to the left as 
the mechanical advance does its thing. If the timing marks don't 
move, you should send the distributor to me to be freed up and 
rebuilt.

You can also check the advance by grabbing the rotor and twisting it 
CW. It should move 1/2" or so and snap back smartly when you release 
it. If it doesn't want to move, it will need to be serviced. If it 
moves, but only sluggishly, you can try a couple drops of oil in the 
felt pad in the top of the shaft under the rotor. Let this soak in 
and see if that helps over a few days.

DON'T try to drive a car with no advance. That's really hard on the 
engine.
