I'm replacing the axle boots on my 65. they are the split type with the nuts
and I was wondering where to put the seam. Towards the front or straight up?

The seam must be horizontal. My first choice would be to the rear, but if they
are a lot easier to get to if facing to the front, that would also be okay.

I did one of those years ago on a bug, and the VW-supplied instructions that came with them specified horizontal positioning with the seam facing rearwards.
