I had that happen on a Beetle - the cable was holding with a few strands, but had stretched so much it wouldn't operate the clutch properly. Stay positive for the moment, and hope it's not the welds. I suppose the operating shaft in the bell-housing might have broken. The return spring on the operating shaft would still make the pedal come back but only weakly. Dave.
