They do fail in the closed position.<< Just the other day I saw a good writeup on the Brazilian thermostats (I think it was on Samba). Somebody had disected one to see how they work. Turns out it's a wax-motor type. There's a plunger surrounded by a rubber bladder, surrounded by wax, surrounded by the metal case. It turns out the big spring is there to MAKE THE PLUNGER RETRACT! So, yes, they will fail closed when the wax leaks out. Too bad it's not a bi-metal. Then it would be almost bulletproof. Any metallurgists on the list up for producing a new bi-metal thermostat for us?
