Here's a pretty good writeup on testing out your starting system. It's
for Type 2s but the same principles generally apply.

You may have the classic problem whereby the ignition circuit for the
solenoid gets "tired" for lack of a better technical term and needs to
have a relay introduced into the system. But test out your system first
before anything. Don't assume the starter is bad, out of hand.
