I > think that's the show stopper. > Yes, there is a hole in the bottom of the seal for the pivot pin to go through - no need to cut it! Seal in its correct place, pivot pin goes down through hole. Top is then re-rivetted. If you tried cutting the seal, I think you would always see the rubber join, but only you would! However, I think fitting the rubber after the upper hinge is fixed to the door could be a bit trickier than rivetting, but maybe it would pop in place easily. The 'proper' way to set the rivet is with rivetting pliers that squeeze the rivet with everything in place - not forgetting the fibre washer of course. The original rivet is a flat-head rather than countersunk. I would rather use a blind rivet and fill the hole after tapping out the mandrel (assuming it's ferrous and would rust otherwise). Dave.
