You can look under the engine and see if the thermostat is compressed (flaps closed) or sprung (flaps open). It should open in several minutes of idling or less of actual driving, You can carefully heat it with a torch and it will open that way too, but don't do it on the engine and set the oil on fire. You can also paint a mark on the shaft that runs between banks. Just make sure the return spring is on there so if the thermostat fails it will get pulled open by the spring, The Bentley shows quite well exactly how all this should be set up. Hi Thanks for the friendly advice. I can't see how the flaps themselves direct flow - they seem to be a doorway only. If it does not make sense to remove the flaps how do you folks test to make sure that they open and that they open at the correct time? Shall I boil the little springy thing that sits under the case? At what temperature is it supposed to open?
