<x-flowed>I did exactly what Russ suggested with success.

Then I did a similar thing to the other connection
by soldering a wire to the brass washer (which
also soldered the center steel piece) drilling
a hole and soldering the other end to the end 
of the male spade connector. Success!

Thanks, I now have a properly working gas gage.
