I would have thought that 75mA would have been okay with a 6V 
battery, but it's interesting that it was too much.

I used to know  a guy who put his car on a timed charger over the 
winter. That way he could set the charger to just run for about 1 
hour per day. That was more than enough to keep it healthy. Half an 
hour might also be fine.

Just use an ordinary $6 light timer.
