Those were intended to be the Beetle replacement - developed at Wolfsburg as EA97 more or less in parallel with the Type 3. The one in the museum at Wolfsburg is dated 1960. It was meant to have a 1200 cc engine, but wasn't powerful enough so they didn't take it further as it couldn't have been an entry model with a larger engine than that. VW of Brazil took up its manufacture - they were often used as taxis. ISTR there was a story that the press tools being sent to Brazil were lost when the ship went down and they had to make more. Can't remember much more than that, but Simon Glen would know, (wherever he is at the moment - anyone know?). Would you be able to drive it in the USA? Do they allow just old cars in as personal imports? They make a very good glassfibre 356 shell for a Bug chassis here in the UK - called a Chesil Speedster. Dave.
