That sounds really good, although you might want to slosh some oil 
around in there to keep it rust free until you can get it filled with 
gas. If you're going to get gas in it right away, this is not 
necessary.

You're doing exactly the right thing.

Yup.

That foam weatherstrip is a good thing to replace any time you have 
the tank out. It just helps prevent squeaks, and you can use stuff 
you buy at the hardware store.

Make sure you have the 2 large "rubber bands" which go around the 
ends of the large nipples on the gas tank and the filler pipe, and 
that the hose connecting the two fits over. That hose WILL NOT SEAL 
if you don't have those bands in there. Bicycle inner tube will NOT 
work here; it's the wrong kind of rubber, but that part is still 
available from VW because they were also used on Beetles.
