So I cleaned out my Fasty's fuel tank today. There were some minor rust spots inside, nothing too worrisome, though. Most of the rust was at the very bottom of the bowl in the tank- a spot about the size of a half-dollar around the fuel outlet. I washed it out with some of the POR-15 Marine Clean, and then treated the inside with POR-15 Metal Ready to give me a nice coating of Zinc Phosphate. Dried it out with my shop vac running in reverse (no, I didn't blow any dirt in there) I'm not going to use the POR-15 fuel tank sealer- the gap between the bowl and the return line worries me that it would get clogged up. That said, I gave a good look at the inside of my tank and it looks absolutely pristine inside, with the metal having a dull flat finish you get from the zinc phospate. I also cleaned up the fuel tank outlet with a little steel wool, and am putting in a new fuel inlet screen. The old one tore apart when I took out the fuel outlet. Now all that's left is to replace the fibre washer in the fuel outlet, and wire brush and paint the edges of the fuel tank and put in a new weatherstrip. My fuel vent hose is solid, so no likelihood that water is going to get into this tank in any appreciable quantity. Anything else I should be doing with the tank? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
