I believe that the body opening NEVER changed. It is the same for all type 3s
of all years, except for type 34 Ghias, where it is completely different. So
the VIN is irrelevant.
If you're buying a replacement windshield, just assume that it is the early
larger size, use the early, more available seal, and don't try to install the
metal clips that were used in some of the late ('71-3) cars.
The first VIN that MIGHT have come with the metal clips and smaller windshield
was 36x 2 000 001, and that would include ALL '71-3 type 3s originally sold in
the US. On your US '71, you will just have to remove the 4 metal strips that
you'll find clipped to the inside of the windshield opening after you remove
the remnants of the old glass and the rubber seal. If your rubber seal is still
in good shape I believe you can reuse it with the early glass and without the
metal strips.
