RE: [T3] window installing


Lovely...my windshield is totally smashed...it is on the long list of
things to fix....(71 FB...)
Jim--you wouldn't happen to know the hull numbers that change started on
or some other obvious marker before I shell out a hundred and a half for
new glass that does not fit would you? (er...serial numbers...)

Starting in '71, VW added some extra metal pieces inside the 
windshield opening, which are supposed to help hold the windshield in 
place in an accident. While the body opening did not change, the 
addition of these extra clips made it necessary for the windshield 
itself to be a bit smaller. The rubber gasket was also changed to 
grasp the metal pieces.

This change was done only for cars exported to the US and a few other 
markets. For the rest of the world, the windshield stayed the same. I 
believe that most aftermarket replacement windshields are of the 
early, larger size.
