<x-flowed>1. disconnected green wire, DF, from regulator.
2. attached voltmeter + to generator DF+,  and voltmeter - to ground.
3. started engine.
4. shorted DF+ to ground.

Results:  when engine was started, meter read 4 volts. when shorted, the 
meter fell to
0V. Generator is new, brushes are above holder.
