Thanks. Remember my Notch engine hanger mounts that you liked at the 2004
Invasion, I welded them in too. Kinda looked factory, unless you knew better. :
) Yeah, I stared at that open hole for quite a while, trying to decide if I
really wanted to put that big motor in it (in my 69). I eventually mocked it
in place. You were mentioning adding a second t-3 hanger or something along
those lines, but after mocking mine in, you'd really be better off fabing
something new from the start. I only say that, because I heated and re-shaped the
the t-3 part ("z" shaped the ends), along with doing some major trimming around
the oil pump area, just to get it close to working. In my case, I ended up
cutting the t-3 bar into 3 pieces, then shaped it into what I needed, then welded
it all together. This gave me something close to the right length, and got it
to fit the t-4 engine. By the way you do realize the t-4 uses 4 - 8mm bolts
to hold the rear of the engine, versus 2 - 10mm and one 8mm bolt on a t-3.
When you look at it like that, things get a little nervous about just using a
rear hanger alone.
The bus and 914 use rubber bumpers on a bar that is bolted to steel, and the
engine case (with little brackets at the case end). I'm not really sure on the
914, as I don't own one, but the bar is cast iron (I have one) and it has
tubular shaped ends like it's rubber mounted at the ends. Maybe Toby can help
clear this up here as he's a 914 owner. My T-2 Bentley covers the bus mount
pretty good (both t-1 and t-4 styles), so I was able to get a good look at the
minor differences VW used for the 2 engines. It's hard to believe, but VW used the
mid mount in a bus even with the t-1 engine for the 71 to 73 models. :O The
case end mounts are more for holding the engine up, rather than doing any load
bearing work. The mid mount does the majority of the work, both in torque and
support. I hope this helps., and gives you something to think about.
