I finally got around to following advice and treating my carboned up intake
valves to some serious dose of Marvel mystery oil. Since I did the last
valve job about 10 years ago Ive been putting a bottle through the gas about
once a year, but lately with around 55K on the heads the low end was really
gone again, just like last time when the intake valves got carboned up under
the heads.
A few weeks ago I took and poured some right into the intake on the
engine when cold and pulled the points wire to shut then engine off as soon
as it started to bog down. Im thinking this kept the Marvel on the valves
to sit, for 3 days till I started it again. BIG difference noticed as soon
as I left the subdivision, my low end torque was back! Maybe not all of it
but quite a bit.... and the idle speed was up. I noticed when I went up to
the lake again a couple weeks ago that I didnt have to unload the kids to
get the rig up the incline with my foot to the floor in 1st! It was MUCH
better. I did the same treatment again to get anything that was left just
before leaving for PA but it didnt seem to change things more this time.
Im not sure if it removed ALL the carbon, but it definately removed
alot of it.
And speaking of Snake oil, or the lack of it... Last oil change I used the
Pennzoil High mileage engine oil and it added 2-3psi of oil pressure right
off the bat compared to standard Pennzoil of the same viscosity and under
the same conditions. Are they using better viscosity enhancers or just
marketing 20W50 with a 10W40 label? Not sure but it seems to be making my
older motor feel younger!!
