The point is that you get a break on the license fee, but only because you
don't drive it much. If you're going to drive it every day, you should expect
to pay the same licensing fee as anyone else.

I have Wisconsin collector plates, but we have 2 licensed drivers so we have to
have 2 cars with regular plates (they are actually called "Collector Special"
plates, they have my collector # on them, but they cost the full amount.) All
my other cars have Collector plates, which cosl twice as much as regular
plates, but they never expire.

The way Wisconsin works it is that Collector plates are no good in the months
of Jan & Feb. That's fine with anyone who has a car which they actually
consider collectible, since the salt on the roads then is something you'd avoid
anyway.

The rest of the year, I can drive my collector cars as much as I want, because
there's another car parked here with a regular paid plate on it, so I can't be
accused of slipping under the radar and not paying my share.

Collector cars have to be at least 25 years old, but there's another category
for Antique cars which are more than 50 years old. I believe the plates for
those are even cheaper, but there are more stringent driving restrictions, too.

Every state has similar rules, but they each differ in their details. I just
tried to register one of my collector cars to use the Illinois I-Pass
electronic toll transponder. The I-Pass web registration went smoothly until I
tried to enter the plate number. They knew about the difference between a WI
Collector plate and a Collector Special plate, but they didn't think the plate
numbers could be the same. In Wis they can be, so the web site wouldn't let me
finish.
