I THINK the ~1second "precharge" cycle is independent of the trigger points. I think it will even happen if you completely disconnect the trigger point connector, but I'd have to do a quick test to be sure. OTOH, the throttle valve switch trigger contacts DO seem to depend on the trigger point position, so I could imagine that pumping the pedal might do nothing in that case.
