Personally, after using a stock mechanical fuel pump, then a GOOD electric
fuel pump, and now back to a stock mechanical unit, I prefer the mechanical
unit. Feeds my carbs well and turns off with the engine ;-) The electric
pump was audible, required a power supply and was thus one more [non-stock]
item that could fail. I had the occasional inconvenient power loss...likely
due to a bad ground as I used the ground wire from my original FI fuel pump
pigtail.

Thanks for the input Toby. With the problem reduced now to a few extra cranks on hot start, I'm going to stick with the mechanical pump for now and see what I can do to further reduce the heat soak that seems to be caused by my OTT muffler.
