If you live in any kind of damp climate, you should also buy the silicone boots
which fit over the ends of the bakelite SP connectors. These seal moisture away
from the SP insulator and make a significant difference when starting in damp
weather. I believe these are still available from VW, and I have a few of them.
They are reusable, even if your SP connector goes bad. They are rather
expensive, but they are one of the most useful improvements VW ever introduced.
There were 2 versions, the early one, which came out in '67, which doesn't
work, and the late one which came out in '71 (I think) which is excellent.
2. I assume if the SP connector airseal flap isn't gone or torn, then it's in good shape?
3. how do you tell if your wires are in good shape? when would you ever need to replace the actual wire?
