That switch only calls for special attention at idle and when you 
stomp down on the throttle. Without it, it will idle okay, but it may 
not have the full response you expect when you ask for sudden 
acceleration.

It sounds like 2 of your SP connector ends need to be replaced. They 
have resistors inside them and those resistors go open occasionally. 
They just screw into your wires and can be replaced individually. I 
have new and used ones here, as well as bulk SP wire. I also have 
complete aftermarket sets, but I strongly encourage people to keep 
their original screw-on right angle dist cap ends. Those are almost 
irreplaceable and they never wear out.
