You almost certainly have a major fuel obstruction, probably crap in the
tank. This is probably causing your fuel pump to work
harder.
Thanks for the response. Can I assume from this that I should be
receiving a constant , large flow of gas via gravity at the pump inlet
side with a nearly full tank? If so, I am thoroughly stumped as to the
location of the blockage because I have totally drained the tank and
checked the outlet tube/filter at the bottom for obstructions (there was
no filter, and I am going to get a replacement) and there are no
obstructions: gas flows very fast and constant out of the outlet tube. I
have replaced the short hose between the output tube and the metal line
that runs to the back of the chassis, and gas flows out at that spot
powerfully and constantly. That hose is the correct length/bend, and the
output tube is located properly. I also just replaced the hose from the
metal line at the back of the chassis and into the engine compartment,
and that is for sure free of obstructions. When I blew through this line
from the engine compartment side I was able to hear bubbles at the gas
tank: which seems to indicate that there isn't a major blockage. The gas
shot back through when it returned from the gas tank, but then returned
to the constant, but weak dribble. I was checking this without the
in-line filter attached, so it couldn't be the filter.
In sum, fuel is flowing steady at the metal line down low at the back of
the chassis, but is not flowing powerfully/steady once the hose is
brought to the engine compartment. I have the correct diameter and
spankin' new hose, well-fitting fuel injection clamps at the ends, and
nothing is bent or overtightened. The grommet I have on the sheet metal
coming into the engine compartment is a perfect fit... not restrictive at
all. The hose has a 3-4 inch sag I left so it isn't pulled tight between
the engine and the metal line. This problem is the reason I just replaced
all the hoses, so I'm getting the exact same result from the new and old
hose (indicating it was not a problem inside one of the old hoses, and/or
misrouted/misfit new hose).
Thanks for any and all ideas/advise!
