Thanks Russ. I made a considerable dent and tapped and tapped but eventually gave up, drilled a hole and pried it out. Now I'll try to find another frost plug to fit in there and if I can't I'll JB Weld a nice shiny dime in there.

If it's like the twin carbs, these choke units are supposed to be vacuum chambers so the plug should always be re-sealed or the vacuum assist won't work. There is a small hole in the carb wall into the chamber which is supposed to put a slight vacuum in there to lift the piston and assist the choke control process. I also had a sticky piston and nothing I could do really cured it but I eventually found a NOS carb top at a swap-meet for £5 and that got rid of the problem. The electric choke covers should have cardboard seal rings round them to stop air being drawn in. You get new ones of these in the carb repair kits. chris
