I suppose it's possible. Measure the resistance between D+ and DF on your bad
generator. It should be 3.5-4.0 Ohms. As a test, you could compare with the
good generator. The only thing I can think of is that you had some badly
shorted field windings and that was causing you all these problems. Shorted
field windings could happen if they overheated, and you already told us that
this thing looks like it got hot at some time.

I'm still curious about this possibility.

Every time I've had time to check the new one, it's been raining. *grr*.
However I've measured the resistance on the old bad generator, and I only came up
with 0 - 0.1 ohms.


What would result in a harder to spin generator? Higher or lower resistance?
