Since the generator will be putting out current which will be used to maintain this field, the collapse will be slower than it would be if you just disconnected the field wire suddenly. > Even more curious, > my car warmed up and idled easier than it ever has with this new > generator. > it had been taking me almost 10 minutes to get it warmed up enough to > idle without stalling. > [ the motor is a 2275, with dual weber 44IDFs and doesn't have chokes, > and doesn't seem to have room for them, which is a problem I haven't > attempted to address yet. ] > > after installing the new generator it idled almost immediately. > > Could the old generator being bad have been such a load that the engine > had to work harder? I suppose it's possible. Measure the resistance between D+ and DF on your bad generator. It should be 3.5-4.0 Ohms. As a test, you could compare with the good generator. The only thing I can think of is that you had some badly shorted field windings and that was causing you all these problems. Shorted field windings could happen if they overheated, and you already told us that this thing looks like it got hot at some time. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
