Depends on the year. I have a 1997 Jetta GT I bought new. It has 115k on it and have had no problems with the car other than the rubber side moldings falling off, which started after the car was 2 years old. I have only run synthetic oil in it, usually AmsOil when I could get it. Although I have heard that the 2000 models had big problems.
