VW actually sold oversized bearings (they're in the parts list) so I don't think that they can claim that this is a totally inappropriate repair. Berg doesn't like the idea. My feeling is that align boring won't save a case which has been beaten out badly by driving it hard and treating it poorly, but it can salvage a case which has lived a long gentle life and just needs some TLC to get back in the game. I suspect that Berg's experience is with race engines, which have been beaten so hard that they deformed quickly, and that this kind of damage can be accompanied by other problems (microcracks in the metal, for example) that a long slow plastic deformation wouldn't produce. For a case like that, align boring might well be only a very temporary fix, but for a gently driven street engine, an align bore should be as good as new. I've always had RIMCO do my case work, although I just saw that John Connelly now recommends a place in Colorado for this. He recently wrote in the newsgroup that he had been disappointed in much of the work coming out of RIMCO lately. I'm afraid I figured this was inevitable when, years ago, I saw that they were including lots of Rabbit/Golf machine work in their price list. My RIMCO align bored cases have all served me well for many years, but the last one I sent out to them was probably 10 years ago. Be aware also that there are lots of places who can align bore a VW case for you, but most of them don't have the ability to do it truly well. Just taking it to a random local shop is probably much worse odds than Blackjack.
