VW's school of thought on line boring was that you only did it after you
replaned the 2 halves of the case. None of the factory rebuilt engines
had main bearings that were oversized on the OD. They did have recut
thrusts.
My '66 FB engine went together fine with a standard crank, and standard
case. So did my '64 Ghia engine. And I bet they will last a lot longer
than 20K miles. They will probably outlast me.
