well, it sounds easier than replacing the generator.
Can I get these [ bosch correct? ] at my FLAPS, or is the "right one" 
harder to source?

Also, I thought the generator failed the test, [ DF grounded, measuring 
at D+]:

  "If you give the engine some throttle while doing this, you should 
see voltages well over 15 V"

I got barely a few volts  until I gave it plenty of throttle, and only 
then it got over 15v
I guess I misinterpreted that.  I thought it needed to output around 
12v even at idle, as the regulator
can only discard voltage.

Anyhow. I'm much happier to just replace the regulator.
