<x-flowed>I believe that the cable was original,at least at the pedal end.The dogleg itself is smoothly but not deeply worn.Your guess is as good as mine as to why it broke when it did.But I will take your explanation into account.Sounds logical and probable to me.

In that case, I would suspect that the dogleg was not freely pivoting in the
pedal lever. That would force the cable to flex at the end of the dogleg each
time, which would break it rather quickly.
