That "stuff" on the outside is original insulation. There should also be
some metal skid plate/rack guards there too.
As for the small heat exchangers attached to the muffler, they are
usually rusted so bad, that you have to scarifice the muffler to get the
nuts out. The do add quit a bit to the heating capacity of the car.
