Sorry, said it before, and I realise why you guys with hundreds of miles between
gas stations do it, but topping the tank off right to the top leaves no way for
the fuel or trapped air in the tank to expand as it warms up from underground
temperatures to the sweltering outside air, and then you get gas dribbling from
the overflow.  Two of the Idaho posse did that on a fill-up in Wyoming  - not
the safest scenario really to have fuel pooling on the ground beneath your car.

If you park up on a steep slope to the right, just after filling you need all
that space in the filler hose to stop dribbling fuel out.  It must be impossible
for the fuel level in that pipe to reach the vent hose.

VW tell you not to top it off for just that reason.
