My tip with mig welders (may apply to other types too) is to keep them in a dry
warm place.  That way the wire stays in good condition - nothing worse for
welding than a partly-dull copper coating on the wire spluttering away.  Also
I've killed two rectifiers using them after storing in damp conditions - they
take a lot of warming up again after a cold spell, and damp weather after cold
leaves them covered in condensation.  Might not apply to continental climates as
much as to the UK.
