I'd recommend that you put the same priority on this as on the motor. No
point getting the right motor if you can't keep it cool, and you'll need
the body intact for that. Paint and pretty can come later, of course.
You can rely on the list to provide solid help with the FI system you'd
really rather have for your car -- it's a little more fuel-efficient,
suits the automatic better, requires a little less maintenance and may
actually be cheaper to buy, given the common prejudice against it. The
trick will be finding a complete motor with fuel system intact -- but
that'd be true with carbs as well.
All that said, if I read you right your job prospects are hanging on
this car, and that may not be wise. Under the best of circumstances this
Type 3 is gonna have to have some major downtime that you probably won't
be able to give it unless you acquire another beater to support your
income stream meanwhile. I think I'd put available money into a backup
car first, and take the stress off the Type 3.
